Second National Workshop on Desert Agriculture: Integrating Plant Protection with Soil and Water Sustainability Challenges
On Monday, 08 December 2025, the Second National Workshop on Desert Agriculture: Integrating Plant Protection with Soil and Water Sustainability Challenges was launched at the Higher School of Saharan Agriculture in El Oued. The opening ceremony began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthem. Professor Elhabib GUEDDA, Director of the School, delivered the opening speech, highlighting the importance of organizing such activities for the benefit of students and emphasizing the three main themes of the workshop: plant protection, soil sustainability, and water resource management. Following this, Dr. Abdelmounaim KEMMOULI, member of the workshop’s scientific committee, addressed the workshop’s objectives and its significance, particularly for desert regions. A framework agreement was then signed between the Higher School of Saharan Agriculture in El Oued and the Professional Training Institute of Debila, in the presence of the directors of both institutions. The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Ismail MAHDA, Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the University of El Oued, entitled: “Microbiology of Desert Soil: A Study on the Isolation and Characterization of Certain Cyanobacteria Strains in the Soils of El Oued Province.” The second lecture, delivered remotely by Distinguished Professor Boualem REMINI from the University of Blida 1, focused on: “Water Security in Algeria.” The third lecture was presented by Mr. Abdel Sattar CHERIF, Plant Health Inspector at the Directorate of Agricultural Services of El Oued Province, on the topic:“Major Diseases and Pests Affecting Date Palms in the Oued Souf Region.” The morning session concluded with a question-and-answer session and open discussion, allowing participants to engage with the speakers and share insights.
