Message from the Head of Department
Welcome to the Second Cycle Department of the Higher School of Saharan Agriculture in El Oued.
Our department is dedicated to providing advanced academic training and specialized education in key agricultural fields adapted to Saharan environments. Through a combination of rigorous scientific instruction, practical training, and research-oriented learning, we aim to prepare highly qualified graduates capable of addressing current and future challenges in agriculture.
We are committed to promoting innovation, sustainability, and excellence in both plant protection and animal production. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively to food security, environmental preservation, and the development of agricultural systems in arid and semi-arid regions.

Brief description of the department
The Second Cycle Department of the Higher School of Saharan Agriculture in El-Oued represents the advanced stage of academic and professional training within the institution. It follows the First Cycle Department and is dedicated to deepening students’ scientific knowledge, technical skills, and specialization in key areas of agriculture adapted to Saharan environments.
Students in the Second Cycle Department undergo a three-year academic program. The first year of this cycle (equivalent to the third year at the institutional level) provides a comprehensive foundation in general agriculture, allowing students to consolidate their knowledge and acquire a broad understanding of modern agricultural systems.
During the second and third years, students are oriented toward specialized training, enabling them to develop expertise in clearly defined fields aligned with current agricultural challenges and national priorities.

Mission and objectives
The mission of the Second Cycle Department is to train highly qualified agricultural engineers capable of addressing the specific challenges of agriculture in Saharan and arid regions.
Its main objectives are to:
• Provide advanced scientific and technical education in agriculture.
• Develop students’ analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
• Promote sustainable agricultural practices adapted to fragile ecosystems.
• Prepare graduates for professional integration in agricultural sectors and institutions.
• Encourage innovation, research, and technology transfer in agriculture.
• Contribute to food security and rural development in Saharan regions.
Areas of specialization
The department currently offers two main specializations:
• Plant Protection
This specialization focuses on plant health and crop protection. Students receive training in areas such as plant pathology, entomology, weed science, integrated pest management, and sustainable crop protection strategies, particularly in arid and Saharan ecosystems.
• Animal Production
This specialization is dedicated to livestock production and management. It covers animal nutrition, reproduction, genetics, health management, and sustainable production systems adapted to desert and semi-arid conditions.
